Vote for Change!

May 2nd, 2008 Posted in Events | No Comments »

With this election, we have the chance to ensure that more voters than ever take an active stake in our country’s future. On May 10, Obama for America will launch Vote for Change, a national voter registration and mobilization drive with kickoffs in all 50 states. Houston for Obama, in collaboration with Obama for America, is hosting a kickoff event for our area at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 10 at the Houston for Obama office at 2520 Southmore. After a brief training we will hit the streets to register voters. Please join us!

In order to prepare for this historical event, we will be deputizing volunteers to become voter registrars on Saturday, May 3 at 10 a.m. and Friday, May 9 at 7 p.m. Getting deputized in advance will allow you to hit the streets and register voters immediately after the rally on May 10. If you cannot attend one of these earlier sessions, we will be deputizing at 11:30 a.m. after the rally on May 10. The deputy registrar trainings last approximately 1 hour.

We also need volunteers to help us spread the word about this exciting program. If you would like to help us phonebank to recruit volunteers, please come to the Houston for Obama office at 2520 Southmore Friday, May 2 anytime between 2-8 p.m. Phonebankers should plan to bring their own cell phone. You can also call from home by using the online phonebanking tool at http://my.barackobama.com/callvols

Finally, we have a “wish list” of items we need to make this event a success. If you would like to donate any of the following items, please let us know:

clipboards
pens
bottled water
snacks (ie. granola bars)
Obama support packs & stickers (these can be ordered from barackobama.com)

Dear Obama friends,

May 1st, 2008 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

I have been asked many times if I believe Obama will be the next President. Every time I answer a whole-hearted - Yes. I cannot believe that any effort in which so many people work hard with dedication and sacrifice cannot be successful. But there is always one caveat to that answer…we have to continue to work. We cannot become complacent. We cannot say we are tired. We cannot think that now that our state has had it’s primary that we can rest until the general election. If we do, we will lose ground. Instead we need to continue that forward momentum. And it will take each and every one of us, in all 50 states, to make that happen.

Now as much as ever the campaign needs your help. Specifically, North Carolina needs volunteers. They need canvassers on the ground walking and knocking on doors from now until their primary next Tuesday, May 6. If you are able, I encourage you to travel there to help out. If you cannot, please help make calls to other states to help recruit volunteers. I volunteered in Pennsylvania for two weeks prior to their election and I can tell you that we did not have enough feet on the streets and I honestly think that impacted the results of the election. People in Pennsylvania seemed to honestly be undecided and just looking for a reason to vote for Obama. That personal contact with a passionate supporter was usually enough to tip the scales. If we had had enough volunteers to effectively reach out to each one of them, I have no doubt the results would have been different.

Obama for America is asking Houston for Obama and the other Texans for Obama grassroots groups to help recruit volunteers to travel to North Carolina. Attached is a link to make calls to potential volunteers. Please take an hour or two or more, preferably Tuesday night, to make calls to these states and encourage volunteers to head to North Carolina. This is one of the most significant ways we can help secure the nomination for Obama.

As I told one little girl in Pennsylvania who donated $2 from her allowance and apologized that is wasn’t much, “Two plus two equals five.” The sum is greater than the total of the individual parts, and it will take the synergistic effect of every one of us to lead to the ultimate success of this campaign.

How you can help

April 21st, 2008 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Just because the Texas primary has come and gone, doesn’t mean you can’t help out.  The Obama campaign is looking for volunteers to help make phone calls, travel to other states, and help with fund raising.

To find out more, visit the Obama for America website.

Supply request

March 27th, 2008 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

While things have quieted down at the office on Travis, work is still going on there through at least March 29.  As the staff and volunteers continue to work to secure delegates for Obama here in Texas, they have some office supply needs.  If you are able to contribute any in-kind donation requests listed below, please contact Hallie Montoya Tansey at hmontoyatansey@barackobama.com

1. Toner Cartridge for Lexmark E250dn printer.  Available at Cartridge World for approximately $70.

2. Checks to Verizon in any amount to put minutes on prepaid cell phones.

3. Gift certificates to Kinko’s in any amount.

Thank you!

Help Get More Delegates for Obama

March 26th, 2008 Posted in Events | No Comments »

As we get closer to this weekend’s Senate District and County Conventions, which will finalize the outcome of the March 4th Precinct Conventions, we must FOCUS on securing delegates for Senator Obama in Texas. Over the past few days, some have asked the question “How do I help?” Here are 5 must-dos for this week:

5 – Share the good news about Senator Obama’s candidacy - The race in Texas is far from over. Despite the projections and prognostications that were made, this weekend is when we need it to happen. We need all of our supporters to continue spreading a positive message about the Obama campaign.

4 – Attend a delegate preparation session in your area. If you area delegate, it’s critically important that you attend an information session that provides an overview of what to expect and discusses specific strategies to ensure victory at the Senate/County Conventions. For a complete schedule, please visit the EVENTS section at texas.barackobama.com. In the Houston area, 2 trainings will be held every night, Monday- Thursday at 6pm and 8pm, and at 6pm on Friday, at the Obama for America HQ- 3710 Travis @ Alabama office. PLEASE sign up at the above website so we can be sure to accommodate all of you.

3 – Get excited, GET ORGANIZED. Contact your fellow Obama Delegates and Alternates within your precinct and find out who will be able to attend your Convention this Saturday. Identify persons interested in being delegates to the State Convention in Austin. Have a house party or group meeting and build your team.

2 – Volunteer at the Obama for America Headquarters. 832.665.9720. Assistance is needed with general office administration, in addition to data-entry and phone banking. In the next four days, we want to identify and call all Obama delegates and alternates to remind them of this Saturday’s Conventions and also to encourage them to attend a delegate preparation session.

No matter how much or little time you have to spare every bit helps. Please come to the Travis office anytime from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. and help out.

1 –ATTEND YOUR SENATE DISTRICT CONVENTION. Have tunnel vision for Obama delegates and dedicate your entire Saturday March 29th to a victory for Senator Obama, the next President of the United States!

FIRED UP! READY TO GO!
